The smallest Brazilian state in area.
The jesuits were the first to explore the region, but found hostility from the indians.
In 1590, a fortress was built. Between 1637, the Dutch occupied the region.
After the Portuguese reclaimed the area, the plantation of sugar cane was stimulated.
