Tax Burden
Brazil has a very high tax burden, compared to countries of similar social and economic situation.
- August 22nd 2007. Tax burder in 2006 was 34.23% of GNP, according to Receita Federal. This is up from 33.38% in 2005, and is a new all time high in Brazil. These figures were already adjusted by the new methodology used by IBGE to calculate GNP.
According to a spokesman from Receita, there was no increase in tax rates or creation of new taxes. Still according to Receita, the increase in revenue is due mostly to economic growth and to new companies and people following the law (the revenue from Social Security collections is the one which most contributed to increase in the total tax burden).
- July 19th 2007. Another record in tax revenues. According to the Secretaria da Receita Federal, in the first semester of 2007, a total of R$ 282.43 bn was collected. There was an increase of R$ 33.5 bn, compared to same period last year; and this is a real growth (discounted the inflation) of 10.02%, way superior to the growth of the Economy, which is estimated in 4.7% for the period.
