Nelson Piquet lost his driving license
Nelson Piquet, three times Formula-One World Champion (in 1981, 1983 an 1987), had his driving license seized by the Police, and is now taking driving lessons to get the license back.
According to the Brazilian Code of Transit,
besides being fined, a driver gets penalty points every time an infraction occurs; if a driver reaches 20 points within one year, the license is automatically seized, and the driver must take driving lessons to get it back. The number of penalty points increases with the severity of the infraction; light infractions (like parking a car more than half a meter distant from the sideways) yields one or two points, medium and serious infractions (crossing a red light) yields up to seven points, and very serious infractions (driving over 50% above limit) may cause immediate license seizure.
Piquet reached 29 points, most of them because of overspeeding and parking in prohibited places. Piquet and his wife, Viviane (who also lost her license), will attend seven days of defensive driving lessons, three hours a day. Piquet has been living in Brasilia for several years.
Piquet’s words: “Nobody wants to stay sitting in a classroom for seven days, but we always learn something. They showed images of car accidents, and I was very impressed; there are many imprudent people driving”.
