  • March 2004. Lula said that “money found is yours to keep”. A man who cleans toillets in the airport of Brasilia finds a briefcase with US$ 10,000 and returns it to the owner. The man gains notoriety and Lula arranges a meeting with him. In front of TV cameras (this dialogue was aired by TV Globo), Lula talks to the man: “Why did you return this money? Didn’t your colleagues mock on you?”; the man replies: “Yes, some did, but I returned the money because that was the right thing to do”; to which Lula replies: “…ah, but money you found, money without an owner”. See bottom of this post for a transcript of the dialogue (Lula asking why he returned the money); at this post, a blogger revives the case.
